Continuous improvement approach leads to recycling and waste benefits
 
CHALLENGE
 
Having worked with i-Clean Systems to benchmark the recycling and waste requirement across the campus and undertaken a tender process for the services, the University now needed to measure, record and drive continuous improvement across the facility.
 
At the same time there was a requirement to engage with the third sector, the circular economy and develop some alternative closed loop recycling solutions whilst reviewing progress across the whole campus.
 
SOLUTION
 
The University engaged i-Clean Systems to undertake a "recycling and waste continuous improvement review" that would report on all aspects of recycling and activity across the campus. This included a review of the providers who were successful in the earlier tender process and the solutions being provided currently.
 
RESULT
 
A closed loop solution has been developed with a charity who are re-using redundant furniture in their work with people facing social difficulties. The University are also sending students to this charity to obtain work experience in their specialist fields. Over the past 2 years the University has engaged with another charity to provide "free of charge" bag solutions for students at the end of year clear out. This ensures more items are re-used and recycled and more importantly benefits the charity.
 
The University are considering greener purchasing solutions for mattresses and are trialling a re-use process for pens.
 
"The costs associated with recycling and waste have again been reduced and recycling rates are on the increase against a back drop of expansion in buildings and infrastructure. Through our work with i-Clean Systems we now have an independent verification of our data and more access to alternative solutions in the market place. This gives us confidence to move forward with our recycling vision and implement some of the other strategies that we and i-Clean have put forward"
