All is not it seems...when it comes to clean

But it looks clean...

Just because something looks clean, does not necessarily mean it is clean. As discussed in our previous blog Let's dissect...disinfecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus we also know as Coronavirus is life-changing. It is highly contagious, with new variants, such as the now dominant Delta variant, showing in studies as being up to 60% more transmissible. Consider also, the sickness viruses Norovirus and Rotavirus, neither of which hand sanitisers are effective against, and the significance of hygienically clean increases. The problem with this is germs (microbes) aren't visible to the human eye - the study of them isn't called microbiology for no reason - if they were, we'd have given COVID-19 the swerve. So, what to do?

Unless someone great invents a pocket microscope, the only effective test is through swabbing surfaces. Sitemark is offering independent hygiene audits as a way for organisations to show that work environments are clean and surface contact risk is minimal, providing reassurance to their employees. Our tests have shown that the percentage of non-passes of all swabs - moderate / caution / contaminated - is 20.18%. This means 79.82% of surfaces tested have fully passed but we'd be expecting to see 90% and upwards in an effectively cleaned environment.

Now, there are some known conditions that can influence results - for instance swabbing a visibly dirty surface - but surely this is food for thought?

Quick fact check
  • Swab testing is the quickest way to check hygiene levels
  • 2 types of available swab test are protein and ATP (adenosine triphosphate), both identify microbial deposits
  • External conditions can influence results
  • Incorrect technique can influence results
Conclusion

For proof of microbial contamination, swabbing is the most cost-effective way to get it, but correct technique and external conditions need to be considered. To provide reassurance to your employees, independent evidence is invaluable and can be supported by your own regular system of hygiene audits.
